Arkansas River Cleanup

Join our FREE DISCUSSION GROUP

ArkCleanup2_small.jpg (1943 bytes)The annual Arkansas River Cleanup is a great opportunity to pitch in and make sure our impact on the river is minimized.

When:  Saturday, May 16, 2009 (9 am-12 noon), register at 9 am.  Elephant Rock and Johnson Village areas are always in need of trash cleanup.

Elephant Rock- primarily a boaters campground cleanup (not a river boating cleanup)

Johnson Village- you can boat and clean up.   Perfect for floating down to Ruby.  We did a mini-river cleanup at Ruby Mountain on a past Easter weekend and there was a lot of trash along this stretch of river.

Where:  Meet at the River Park (at the end of Main St) in Buena Vista to sign up.  You can also sign up at AHRA office in Salida.

What:  Bring warm clothes and sign in at the location listed above

Be Careful:  Please respect all private property "No Trespassing" signs even if there is trash to pick up.  Some private property owners might not appreciate trespassing on their land even if you are picking up trash.  Better safe than sorry.  Of course, if you plan to boat and pick up trash use appropriate safety guidelines.

FREE:  Volunteer picnic lunch is provided in Salida (12-3 pm)

Contact:  Lyn Berry

Expect that this is not a "boating" event but rather a river cleanup event.  If you plan to boat, realize that you need space to carry lots of trash securely and will go very slowly.  It took us about 2-3 hours to cover JV to Ruby because we stopped a lot to pick up trash.  Dress warmly as Mid-May can be cold and even snowy.  Elephant Rock in particular has been an unofficial (unimproved) boater campground.  We really want to encourage the cleanup in the camping area to preserve future camping in this area.

What can you do on the river?ArkCleanup1_small.jpg (1884 bytes)

  • Practice "Leave no Trace" outdoor ethics www.LNT.org , 1-800-332-4100
  • Pack out all of your trash (if you see trash left by others, please pick it up and carry it out)
  • Always use a firepan for any campfires
  • Urinate in the river or wet sand (don’t go in the bushes or on the river bank)
  • Carry out solid human waste in a portable toilet (groover)
  • Avoid creating multiple trails in the river corridor (stay on main trails)
  • Float quietly by fishermen and riverside landowners
  • Respect wildlife and livestock
  • Obey "No Trespassing" signs
  • Choose durable lunch spots, such as sandbars or rocky beaches
